The hormonal coil, also known as an IUS (intrauterine system), is a small, flexible device placed inside your womb (uterus) that provides long-lasting contraception. It slowly releases a progestogen hormone, similar to the natural progesterone produced by your ovaries, to prevent pregnancy by thickening cervical mucus and thinning the womb lining.

Depending on the type fitted (such as Mirena, Kyleena, or Jaydess), the hormonal coil can last between 3 to 5 years. It’s highly effective, convenient, and often reduces menstrual bleeding and discomfort. For some patients, especially those aged over 45, the Mirena coil may offer contraception right through to menopause.
